The Demographics of Canadian Columnists
A recent study examined the demographics of Canadian columnists. While white Canadians still make up the majority of the population, there has been a steady increase in the number of women and non-white people among the country’s newspaper columnists. In fact, the number of female columnists in Canada has increased by nearly 30 percent since 1996, while males have decreased. In addition, the number of columnists from minority groups has been increasing as well. More info – Marc Kielburger
Here Is A Method That Is Helping The Demographics Of Canadian Columnists
Despite this racial imbalance, many Canadian columnists are not very diverse. While 95 percent of the population is white, the majority of columnists in Canada are white. The list of non-white Canadians is small but represents an important segment of Canadian society. The sex composition of the majority of Canada’s population also does not reflect the diversity of the nation. For example, only one columnist is black.
The country’s media should include a more diverse roster of columnists. While most of the leading Canadian newspapers are hiring non-white writers, the majority of Canadian columnists are white. This whiteness is a symptom of unconscious racism and a barrier to diversity in journalism. As a result, the majority of Canadian columnists are still white. Among non-white writers who started their careers in 1996, the proportion was 80 percent.
