How to Choose Quality Insulation for Your Attic

Getting the attic properly insulated is one of the most cost-effective home improvement projects you can make. It will reduce energy costs and keep you cool and comfortable during the hot summer months. If you’re not ready to commit to a professional contractor, consider the Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program to help pay for your insulation upgrades.

While you may be familiar with fiberglass batt or roll insulation, there are several other options to choose from. Cellulose, mineral wool, and spray foam are just a few of the choices to consider for your attic. Each has its pros and cons.

Quality Insulation: What Makes the Difference in Performance

Loose-fill insulation, such as cellulose and rock wool, is a cost-effective option for attic insulation. It can be blown into place with a special machine, or installed in bags and placed between joists and rafters. Rockwool is a great choice for soundproofing your attic, while cellulose can be fire-resistant if it contains ammonium sulfate or borate additives.

Foil insulation, such as foil-backed drywall or mineral wool, can be fitted between joists and beams and is ideal for irregularly shaped areas and around obstructions. It is also a good option if you are replacing attic insulation that has been compromised by mold or mildew.

Rigid foam insulation in Northern Virginia is available in panels or boards made of polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, or polyurethane that can be cut to fit attic areas. It has a high R-value per inch and offers excellent moisture resistance, helping to prevent the development of mold. However, it can emit off-gasses during and after installation, requiring adequate ventilation. Also, it should only be installed by trained professionals due to safety precautions and the need for protective equipment like masks and goggles.
